While technically winter, the weather remains inviting; thus, it is an ideal time to enjoy the beaches and engage in various outdoor fun.

Can you swim in Riviera Maya in December?

Yes. It’s still warm enough to swim as the sea temperature stays around 80 °F (27 °C).☀️🏖️

  • Explore Mayan Ruins: Visit the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza, Tulum or Coba to discover the rich history of the Mayan civilization. These archaeological sites are not only culturally significant but also offer stunning views. Check out my blog post on How to Visit Chichen Itza.
  • Snorkeling and Diving: Explore the Great Maya Reef, one of the world’s largest coral reef systems. The clear waters make December an excellent time for snorkeling and scuba diving, allowing you to witness vibrant marine life.
  • Shopping on Fifth Avenue: Stroll along Playa del Carmen’s famous Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) for a Christmas shopping experience. Discover unique souvenirs, clothing, and local crafts.

There are plenty of accommodations from budget hostels to luxury suites along the coast. One place I keep going back is Banyan Tree Mayakoba, located just north of Playa del Carmen. Most villas have own private pool and they have excellent dining options. While the resort is luxurious, it is also family friendly. Highly recommended. 👍

2. Hawaii

Hawaii, the tropical jewel of the Pacific, is a slice of paradise bursting with natural beauty and Aloha spirit. Whether it’s the volcanic wonders of Big Island or the lush green landscapes of Kauai, the breathtaking natural beauty is what you need this December. It’s one of the best places to visit in December in USA.

Honolulu

In December, Hawaii experiences mild and pleasant temperatures ranging from the low 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit. While there’s an uptick in rainfall, especially on windward sides, it’s usually a quick shower here and there. Tradewinds provide comfortable conditions, making it a great time for outdoor activities. The North Shore of Oahu sees the beginning of big wave season, attracting surf enthusiasts. 🌊🏄‍♀️

Can you swim in Hawaii in December?

Yes. The water temperatures remain at about 74 °F (23 °C), so enjoy the water activities Hawaii is known for. In fact, swimming is a year round activity in Hawaii.

Which islands should I visit in hawaii?

Each island offers a unique experience. Your choice should depend on your travel style. Island hopping is also an option if you cannot decide. 🏝️✈️

Waikiki and Diamond Head
Waikiki and Diamond Head
  • Oahu: Highlights include Honolulu and the famous Waikiki Beach. Many holiday events take place in December, such as Honolulu City Lights Parade and Waikiki New Year’s Fireworks. You should not miss the historic Pearl Harbor and the iconic Diamond Head. Oahu is the best choice for families.
  • Maui: Maui features lush rainforests, volcanic craters, and beautiful beaches. The Road to Hana and Haleakalā National Park are must-see attractions. Perfect for nature lovers.
  • Hawaii (Big Island): Its main attraction is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, but it also offers many water activities. My favourite activity is to go stargazing at the top of Mauna Kea. Although you can DIY, joining a tour is also nice as they can give you information on stars and inactive volcano.
  • Kauai: Accessible by boat, helicopter, or challenging hikes, Na Pali coast offers breathtaking views, sea caves, and the iconic Kalalau Valley. Be warned, it’s a challenging hike especially in December when you have a higher chance of rain.
  • Molokai: A quieter and less known and developed island, Molokai offers a chance to experience traditional Hawaiian culture.
  • Lanai: Most of the land is privately owned, but you can enjoy luxurious resorts, pristine beaches, and a serene atmosphere. This is where my favourite hotel in Hawaii is.

Where to stay in Hawaii in December

This really depends on your preferred activities, style, and budget. As with anywhere else, Christmas is a busy time, so make sure to book early to avoid disappointment and save money. If this is your first time, I recommend checking out Oahu at least for a few day. I always stay at Halekulani Hotel at Waikiki. It’s a luxurious beachfront resort with a great Waikiki view. It’s reasonably priced for the location and facilities.

But if you’ve already explored Oahu and other islands, consider trying the Four Seasons Resort at Lanai. Although it’s not the cheapest option, starting from the moment you arrive (including the special lounge at Honolulu), to the private air transport, the suite with an amazing view, and all the fantastic activities – it’s undeniably an excellent place to make your trip absolutely unforgettable!👍

3. Reykjavik

While any time is ideal for a visit to Reykjavik, December is particularly good. If you want to see the Northern Lights, this month is a good choice, as the nights are longer.

Can I see the Northern Lights in December?

northern lights, iceland

Nothing is guaranteed as the viewing depends on the weather and light climate. However, December is one of the best months to see aurora borealis. Additionally there are plenty of things to do in Reykjavik and surrounding areas, making Reykjavik one of the best places to visit in December. Icelandic Met Office releases the Aurora Forecast, so keep an eye on it.

Things to do in Reykjavik

  • The Golden Circle: This circuit offers a diverse showcase of Iceland’s natural wonders including Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss waterfall. I have created the best Reykjavik 3 day itinerary. Please check this out for a full itinerary.
  • The Ring Road: If you have 7 days or more, you can also drive around Iceland. You will need to be extra cautious when driving in Iceland in winter, but you will be rewarded with a spectacular nature show. Please check out my blog post on 7 day Ring Road Itinerary

Where to stay in Reykjavik in December

My go-to place in Reykjavik is Kvosin downtown Hotel which is located front of Tjörnin Lake and close to many tourists attractions such as The National Gallery and Rainbow Street. But if you have a car, you can also stay in Vík, about 2.5h drive from the capital. I stayed at Hotel Vík í Mýrdal and highly recommended.

4. Kyoto

While Kyoto attracts crowds during the spring for cherry blossoms and the fall for fall foliage, winter is a particularly overlooked season to explore Japan’s cultural capital. You will see fewer crowds amid beautiful snow-capped temples, making December one of the best places to visit.

Does it snow in Kyoto in December?

The average snowfall in Kyoto in December is 38mm. (compared to New York City which receives 1.34″ of snow). So, generally, it’s not enough to cause traffic havoc, but just enough to see the beautiful mountains and temples snow-capped.

Things to do in Kyoto

Geisha - Gion Kyoto
Geisha – Gion Kyoto
  • Kinkakuji: Let’s start with a must. Kinkaku-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto. It’s one of the most iconic place in Japan. I’m sure you have seen a picture, but visiting the temple in winter is truly magical as the golden exterior and the snow on the roof reflect in the surrounding pond. Also, take your time to stroll through the surrounding garden, where you’ll see pine trees covered with snow, moss-covered stones. Even if you’re not a Buddhist, you can’t help but feel a sense of peace.
  • Kiyomizu-dera: This is also a must if you’re in Kyoto in winter. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic Buddhist temple offers a unique wooden terrace that offers panoramic views of the city. On the new year’s eve, you can join their famous Bell-Ringing Ceremony where the bell is struck 108 times to symbolize the 108 “earthly desires” Buddhism acknowledges must be overcome.
  • Gion: Gion is a historic district renowned for its traditional charm and association with the geisha culture. Lined with classic wooden townhouses known as machiya, you can explore narrow alleys, experience authentic tea ceremonies, and, if lucky, encounter geisha strolling along the cobblestone streets. December is particularly beautiful, as the streets come alive with a gentle glow from traditional lanterns. The district also offers a unique nightlife experience, with various bars and izakayas.

The way to experience real Japan is to stay at a ryokan. It is a traditional Japanese inn featuring traditional Japanese architecture, including tatami mat flooring, and sliding paper doors. You will be given yukata, casual cotton kimonos, to wear during their stay. Often, kaiseki dinner, a multi-course meal with seasonal and local ingredients is included. Of course, you can also enjoy Onsen (Hot Springs). ♨️Togetsutei is recommended. Conveniently located in Arashiyama, a picturesque district along the Hozugawa River, surrounded by lush mountains and dense bamboo groves, this traditional ryokan offers unique rooms with private outdoor onsen. Traditional Japanese-style breakfast and dinner are included.

5. Nuremberg

In December, Nuremberg transforms into a festive wonderland with its renowned Christmas Market. Germany is known for its charming Christmas markets. But Nuremberg is my personal favourite and one of the oldest in the world. It is like stepping into a festive fairy tale, filled with joy, good food, and holiday magic. 🎄✨

Things to do in Nuremberg in December

Nuremberg Christmas Market
Nuremberg Christmas Market
  • Christkindlesmarkt: You’re here for the Christmas Market! The medieval architecture provides a charming backdrop for the market, offering traditional crafts, Lebkuchen (gingerbread), and a magical atmosphere. The city is adorned with festive lights, and special features like the Children’s Christmas Market and seasonal events add to the holiday spirit. Nuremberg in December is a delightful blend of tradition, culinary delights, and festive cheer.
  • Nuremberg Castle: Of course, you’ll have plenty of things to do in Nuremberg outside the Christmas Market. Check out the iconic Nuremberg Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the city. The castle complex includes museums, towers, and stunning views of Nuremberg.
  • Old Town: Nuremberg is a very walkable city. Wander through the charming cobblestone streets of Nuremberg’s Old Town. Discover medieval architecture, picturesque squares, and vibrant marketplaces.

Where to stay in Nuremberg in December

There are usual big nice hotels within the old town and near the train stations. But I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Drei Raben. It’s a charmingly quirky little hotel located within the old town and a short distance from the Christmas market. All rooms are individually decorated and it’s a perfect place for the winterly fun.

6. New York

Probably the best place to visit in December in the US (apart from Hawaii, of course) is New York. The Big Apple buzzes with seasonal cheer, highlighted by the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and the gleaming window displays of Fifth Avenue. 🗽🎄 With plenty of shopping and sightseeing opportunities in addition to holiday markets, New York stands out as one of the best places to visit this winter.

Things to do in New York in December

Rockefeller Center New York
Rockefeller Center New York
  • Rockefeller Center: Check out the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and enjoy ice skating at the famous ice skate rink. The area is totally “christmasified” with holiday decorations and lights. You have to experience the magic of New York.
  • Central Park: Visit the serene beauty of Central Park, which takes on a magical atmosphere with possible snowfall. Kids will love ice skating at Wollman Rink or taking a horse-drawn carriage ride.
  • Radio City Christmas Spectacular: It’s a New York tradition at the historic Radio City Music Hall. The highlight of the show is the precision dance troupe known as the Rockettes. Renowned for their synchronized kicks and formations, the Rockettes bring a high level of skill and energy to the performance.
  • Holiday Markets: Yes, New York has a number of Holiday Markets offering local and not-so-local crafts. One of the largest is held at Bryant Park, where you can enjoy free ice skating. It’s a perfect spot for finding unique gifts and immersing yourself in the festive atmosphere.
  • Museums: If you’ve had enough of holiday fun, you can explore New York’s renowned museums. Close to the Central Park, one of my favorites is The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The other fun option especially for kids is American Museum of Natural History
  • Shopping: Whether or not you’re a fan of luxury shopping, a stroll along Fifth Avenue is a must. The iconic boutiques and flagship stores are not just shops—they’re like festive wonderlands, beautifully decorated and adding a touch of magic to your visit.

Where to stay in New York in December

If you’re planning to go to New York in December, book a hotel now! It’s the busiest time of the year, and rates only tend to increase as Christmas and New Year approach. You can stay close to the Times Square or Central Park, but it’s also fun to stay in trendy lower Manhattan. Try Roxy Hotel in TriBeCa. It’s a funky boutique hotel featuring a mid-century modern aesthetic with hints of Art Deco. It comes with a cinema, a nightclub, and an oyster bar. You can enjoy the live music at the bar.

7. Sydney

Sydney is renowned for its spectacular New Year’s Eve celebrations. Preparations for the grand fireworks display over Sydney Harbour are in full swing in December, making it one of the best places to celebrate the New Year.

Sydney New Year
Sydney – Things to do in December
  • Bondi Beach: It’s about 25 minutes drive from Sydney to the Bondi Beach. You can put a santa hat and lounge on the beach. Or, if you’re adventurous try surfing. There are a few surf schools offering private/group/kids lessons. At the southern end of the beach, there’s the famous Bondi Icebergs Club, which includes a unique ocean pool. It’s filled with seawater and offers stunning views of the coastline.
  • Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk: This scenic 6 km walking trail starts at Bondi and takes you along the cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. It should take you 2-3 hours. Along the way, you’ll discover charming beaches, cliffs, and a peaceful cemetery, but don’t worry – there are also some cozy cafes and restaurants to make your journey extra enjoyable.
  • Sydney Harbour: One of the iconic things to do is to celebrate the new year is to witness the world-famous New Year’s Eve fireworks display over Sydney Harbour 🎆🎉 The best place to see the fireworks is along the harbor. As you can imagine, it gets very busy, so plan ahead and make dinner arrangements in advance. While there’s no spot more iconic than the Opera House for a front-row seat to the fireworks, the Royal Botanic Garden offers a fantastic view of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. It’s a lively party scene with numerous food stands and bars.
  • Christmas Markets: Though they’re not quite like the German Christmas Markets, Sydney will have some Christmas markets for your gift shopping. One of the biggest and liveliest ones is Le Jolly Market at Custom House Square, where you can shop for locally sourced artisan products, eat, and enjoy Australian wine.

Where to stay in Sydney in December

There are many well-known hotels with great harbour views, including Four Seasons, Park Hyatt, Marriott Hotel, Intercontinental. Disclaimer; I have not stayed any of them, but I’m sure they’re all great. But I actually recommend a Youth Hostel. YHA Sydney Harbour has a rooftop terrace with a great view of the Harbour and the Operat House. Although you’ll need to be a member to stay, it’s a more budget-friendly option and an excellent place to meet fellow travelers.

8. Zermatt

Zermatt is a picturesque and renowned mountain village in the Swiss Alps. Located at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn, it offers world-class skiing in winter and boasts luxury accommodations.

How to get to Zermatt

If you’re coming from outside Switzerland, you’ll likely arrive at a major Swiss city such as Zurich, Geneva, or Basel. From there, take a train to Visp, as Zermatt is a car-free zone. Then, board a train bound for Zermatt, which should take just over one hour and offer breathtaking views. There, you’ll find electric taxis waiting to take you to your hotel. Alternatively, you can drive as far as Täsch where you can leave your car and get on the shuttle train to Zermatt. The journey should take 12 minutes.

Of course, if you want to arrive in style, you can take a helicopter from various major airports such as Geneva and Zurich to Zermatt’s own heliport operated by Air Zermatt. They also offer sightseeing flights.

Once in Zermatt, you can easily move around on foot, by electric taxi, or by horse-drawn carriage.

Zermatt
  • Ski: You’re here to ski in one of the most picturesque mountains. There are three main mountains, each offering a unique experience and a variety of terrains to suit your level. But for the best views of the Matterhorn, take the funicular to Sunnegga. This 3 minutes ride will take you to the Sunnegga-Rothorn ski area where you will be rewarded with picture-perfect views of the Matterhorn.
  • Gornergrat: Gornergrat is a ridge near Zermatt. Accessible by the Gornergrat Railway, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Alps, including the Matterhorn. At 3,135 meters, it’s a popular destination for its stunning vistas, hiking trails, and a hotel with a restaurant. A must-visit spot for those exploring the Zermatt region.
  • Après-ski: It’s a french term meaning “after skiing”. After a long day on a slope or if you’re not skiing, there are plenty of other activities in Zermatt. One of the best Après-skit to do is to eat your way through Zermatt! There are plenty of Swiss, Italian, German, and other international restaurants in town. For the best view of the Matterhorn, go to Gornergrat and try Chez Vrony. Focusing on traditional local dishes, they offer a perfect spot for lunch. For a cheerful Italian, check out Vieux-Valais da Nico near the historic Hinterdorfstrasse area.

Where to stay in Zermatt in December

Let’s face it, Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the world. And you’re in one of the best ski resorts in Switzerland. It’s not going to be cheap. For the best view, equipped with luxury and excellent spa facilities, check out The Omnia. In the heart of Zermatt, they offer a blend of modern comfort and traditional alpine aesthetics. For a more chalet style stay, try Cervo Mountain Resort, where they offer modern chalet suites and lodges. Their three restaurants are also highly recommended.

9. Rwanda

Rwanda is an increasingly popular holiday destination offering a unique blend of natural beauty, rich cultural experiences, and a compelling history. December marks the transition from the short rainy season to the beginning of the short dry season, making it an ideal time to visit Rwanda in terms of budget, gorilla trekking, and overall comfort.

Is Rwanda safe to travel?

The country has made significant progress in terms of stability, security, and economic development in the years following the 1994 genocide. And Rwanda is generally considered a safe destination for travelers. As of October 2023, the US Department of State ranks Rwanda as Travel Advisory Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions), while Peru and Mexico are ranked as Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), and Colombia is at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel). You should always exercise common-sense precautions, particularly in crowded areas and during nighttime.

How to get to Rwanda?

While there are no direct flights from North America, you have some options. For a seamless and budget-friendly trip, consider connecting through London or Paris, both offering direct flights. Alternatively, you can explore connecting flights via hubs like Dubai or Johannesburg.

Things to do in Rwanda in December

Bisate Lodge - Rwanda
Credit Bisate Lodge – Rwanda
  • Volcanoes National Park: The top attraction in Rwanda is Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Numerous tour companies provide a range of trekking packages, from day trips to fully-inclusive multi-day excursions including visits to other national parks. Note; you will need to apply for a tourist permit to join a gorilla trekking. The current rate is US$1500 per adult. (the minimum age for gorilla tracking is 15 years.) Tour operators or hotels can assist you with obtaining the permit.
  • Kigali: If you haven’t visited a market in Africa before, you might be overwhelmed by the vendors’ enthusiasm to showcase and sell their products. However, a visit to Kimironko Market is worthwhile, offering a vibrant experience with a diverse array of local crafts, arts, and fresh food produce. Genocide Memorial is also a must visit museum. The memorial was built in honor of over a million victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. This memorial serves as both a place for reflection and education, where over 250,000 victims find their final resting place. Kigali has a vibrant and growing coffee culture that reflects the country’s commitment to producing high-quality coffee. Try one of the specialty coffee shops in while in the city.

Where to stay in Rwanda in December

For gorilla trekking, my strong recommendation is Bisate Lodge at Volcanoes National Park. It’s an eco-friendly lodge offering luxurious villas with stunning views of the Virunga Mountains. Known for its innovative design and commitment to conservation, it’s an ideal base for gorilla trekking expedition. They can arrange various trekking excursions.

10. Paris

Arguably, the most romantic city is Paris, and visiting the City of Light prettified with Christmas décor makes it even more enchanting. While flying during the Christmas period can be expensive, planning a visit a bit earlier in December will pleasantly surprise you with more affordable flights and a less crowded city.

Things to do in Paris in December

There are many many things to do in Paris in all year around. But let me list some of the activities that are particularly appealing in December. For Unique Things to do in Paris, I have written a separate post, click here.

Arc de Triomphe Paris
Arc de Triomphe Paris
  • The Eiffel Tower: Even if you’ve been to the tower before, looking over the dazzling city from the top on a chilly night is so magical that it beckons you to experience it again! For an additional romance, make sure to book a table at the restaurant on the second floor for a fine dining experience with the unmatched view.
  • The Moulin Rouge: In the heart of Montmartre, the iconic cabaret renowned for its dazzling can-can dance performances, extravagant shows, and glamorous red windmill offers an ideal venue for festive celebrations. The classic revue show will blow you away during this lavish spectacle.
  • Christmas Markets: While it’s not quite like the German counterparts, Paris also offers traditional festive markets. One of my favourites is at Tuileries Garden right in front of Louvre Museum. So, visit the museum in the afternoon, and enjoy the evening at the market. Explore traditional crafts, local confectioneries, and enjoy a mini ice skating rink along with some fun rides.
  • Window Shopping: I don’t normally do shopping while traveling apart from at local markets or for some unique local crafts, but strolling along the Champs-Élysées to Arc de Triomphe is one of my favourite things to do. And this is highly recommended as the street is exceptionally twinkly with elegant Christmas decorations and Christmas lights.

Where to stay in Paris in December

For the best view of the Eiffel Tower from your own balcony, go to the luxurious Shangri-La. You can enjoy breakfast on your own balcony with a majestic view of the tower. Make sure to book a Panoramic Signature Room to guarantee the view. I believe it’s worth the price. However, I find the cost of other rooms, which don’t offer a view of the tower, to be too expensive. For more unique experience, try Maison Souquet, a quirky boutique hotel near Moulin Rouge. Housed in a building that once served as a pleasure house during the Belle Epoque, this establishment breathes life into one of the most lavish and licentious chapters in Parisian history. The private use of the spa is perfect for couples seeking a romantic time in the most romantic city.
