Planning a trip to Germany’s Christmas markets this year? They’re not just markets; they’re magical realms of festive joy. Twinkling lights, the aroma of sizzling treats, and the sound of laughter dancing through the air. In my opinion, the best christmas markets in Europe (or the world) are found in Deutschland. So, visit the holiday extravaganza as these markets transform into the ultimate playgrounds of merriment. Here are the 5 best Christmas Markets to visit in Germany in 2023.

1. Essen Christmas Market

In Essen, Christmas arrives like a burst of joy, turning the city into a holiday hotspot that Santa himself would envy! As the historic city center gets bedazzled, just imagine twinkling lights, charming stalls, and the scent of mulled wine that could warm even the Grinch’s heart.

Directly in front of the magnificent Essen Cathedral (Essener Münster), a festive carnival of creativity awaits. Just imagine Santa’s workshop, infused with an extra dose of flair.

Foodies, brace yourselves for a feast! Essen’s Christmas market is a culinary adventure where bratwurst reigns supreme, delivering a flavor explosion that might just inspire a spontaneous carol or two. And let’s not forget the mulled wine – it’s the liquid embodiment of Christmas, warming you up from the inside out and turning the chilliest winter day into a cozy celebration.

But it’s not just about treats for your taste buds. The market comes alive with the sounds of live music, carol singing, and family-friendly attractions that turn the place into a holiday carnival. Psst, there might even be a Santa sighting, doubling as the market’s unofficial selfie king.

Now, here’s the plot twist – Essen’s Christmas market isn’t just about spreading holiday cheer; it’s also got an eco-friendly heart. The focus on local, sustainable goodies ensures that your festive fun doesn’t leave the planet with a holiday hangover.

So, if you’re up for a good time, great food, and enough twinkling lights to make your neighbor’s holiday display seem like a glow-in-the-dark sticker, Essen’s Christmas market is the place to be! It’s not just a market; it’s a holiday adventure waiting to happen.

2. Berlin Christmas Markets

Every year, the entire city of Berlin will be immersed in the festive spirit of Christmas. And this year is no exception. There will be dozens of Christmas market across the city. If you have not been to any Christmas market in Germany before, I recommend WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt which will be at Bebelplatz. (note, the market was relocated since 2022).

While it may be quite crowded and somewhat touristy, resulting in higher prices, the Berliners also frequent this place. Nestled in the backdrop of the Berlin State Opera, the market is undeniably beautiful. Moreover, it’s conveniently located near my favorite spot, “Schokoladenhaus” – Rausch Schokoladenhaus, renowned for its spectacular Christmas chocolate display each year.

Opening Days and Hours; 27 November – 31 December 2023. Sunday – Thursday (12 PM – 10 PM), Friday – Saturday (12 PM – 11 PM), Christmas Eve (12 PM – 6 PM), New Year’s Eve (12:00 PM – 01:00 AM) Entrance; 2 (free for Children under 12, free for all on Monday – Friday (12 PM – 2 PM), except 25, 26, 31 December.

3. Nuremberg Christmas Market

This Xmas Market is my absolute favourite and one of the oldest in the world, dating back to mid 16th century. The Christkind (a bit like Miss Claus but minus tackiness) who wears white and golden dress and golden crown officially opens the Market.

Locals and tourists gather with excitement at the Main Market Square, surrounded by the cheerful stalls of the Christmas Market. Little ones stand on their tiptoes, wide-eyed, peering at the mysterious façade of the Church of Our Lady. And just as the clock hits 5:30 p.m., the air fills with the triumphant sound of trumpets, harmonized by the sweet melodies of a choir from the local music school, crooning festive tunes. As if on cue, the twinkling lights burst into life, casting a warm glow on the Church of Our Lady’s gallery. Bathed in this enchanting radiance, the Nuremberg Christkind steps forward, delivering her celebrated prologue and officially kickstarting the Christmas Market festivities.

The lantern procession by the local children through the market to the Nuremberg Castle is just the magic you need this festive season.

Opening Days and Hours; 1 December – 24 December 2023. Monday – Sunday (10 AM – 9 PM), 24 December (10 AM – 2 PM)

4. Dresden Striezelmarkt

Discover the enchantment of Dresden’s Striezelmarkt, where Christmas magic comes to life! As the oldest Christmas market in Germany, dating back to 1434, Striezelmarkt invites you to step into a world of timeless traditions and festive joy.

Indulge your senses with the sweet aroma of freshly baked Striezel, the precursor to the famous Dresden Christstollen. Immerse yourself in the charming atmosphere of the historic center, adorned with twinkling lights and traditional decorations that transport you to a winter wonderland.

At Striezelmarkt, every corner is a treasure trove of handcrafted delights. From unique ornaments to artisanal crafts, find the perfect gifts for your loved ones. And don’t miss the Stollen festival, scheduled for 9 December this year, where a colossal Christmas Stollen is ceremoniously cut – a true feast for the eyes and taste buds!

As you’re so close to Prague (a couple of hours on a train), you may also want to check out Prague where you can enjoy the breathtaking views of Prague Castle while enjoying Trdelník (Czech sweet pastry), especially at night when the castle is illuminated.

5. Trier Christmas Market

Step into the festive magic at Trier Christmas Market, nestled in the heart of Germany’s oldest city! Don’t be fooled by its lesser-known status and smaller size compared to others. This charming city, famed for its Roman-era ruins and vibrant cultural scene, boasts a rich medieval heritage and a captivating market square presided over by the majestic Trier Cathedral.

Located within a 2.5-hour drive from Frankfurt, the city of Trier offers a less touristy historical market, making the journey well worth it. Additionally, if you’re inclined to explore further, Luxembourg is just under an hour’s drive away.

Opening Days and Hours; 24 November – 22 December 2023. (closed on 26 November) Monday to Thursday (10:30 AM – 8:00 PM), Friday and Saturday (10:30 AM – 9:00 PM), Sunday (11:00 AM – 8:00 PM)

Enjoy!

The winter in Germany is truly enchanting! Wherever you wander, festive Xmas decorations will greet you, and the delightful aromas of Glühwein (mulled wine) and hot chocolate will instantly fill you with holiday cheer. No matter where your adventures take you, remember to stay warm and spread the merry vibes!
