Where are The Best Areas to Stay in Florence?

While you can walk anywhere in Florence, there are several areas to consider. But it’s worth considering various neighborhoods, as each offers unique vibes, levels of convenience, and price level.

  • Historic Center (Centro Storico): This is the heart of Florence, featuring iconic landmarks like the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, and Ponte Vecchio. Staying here puts you within walking distance of major attractions, bustling piazzas, and numerous shops and restaurants. The downside is that it can get busy and pricy.
  • Oltrarno: Located on the opposite side of the Arno River from the historic center, Oltrarno offers a more authentic and laid-back atmosphere. This neighborhood is known for its artisan workshops, quaint streets, and hidden gems. It’s a great option for travelers seeking a quieter stay while still being close to the city center.
  • Santa Maria Novella: Situated around the train station of the same name, this area is convenient for those arriving by train and offers easy access to transportation links. It’s also within walking distance of the historic center and features a mix of hotels, shops, and restaurants.
  • San Lorenzo: Located north of the Duomo, San Lorenzo is known for its lively market, the Mercato Centrale, as well as its proximity to attractions like the Medici Chapels and San Lorenzo Basilica. It’s a vibrant area with plenty of dining and shopping options.
  • Santa Croce: Home to the beautiful Santa Croce Basilica, this neighborhood exudes charm with its narrow streets, local markets, and historic buildings. It’s a bit quieter than the bustling historic center but still offers easy access to attractions and amenities.
